Chicago International Puppet Festival
The Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival advances the art of puppetry by presenting sophisticated programs vital to the cultural life of Chicago. Supported by an AICEF Grant, the Festival presented Yogyakarta-based Papermoon Puppet Theatre in its Festival debut, January 19–21, 2024. While in Chicago, Papermoon presented a family-friendly production called A Bucket of Beetles at the Chopin Theatre in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood in five sold-out performances, reaching 655 patrons. In addition, artists from Papermoon participate in panel discussions during the Volkenburg Puppetry Symposium, the Festival’s public forum for art and ideas intersecting puppetry, and they offer behind-the-scenes experiences to participants in the Catapult program, an intensive Festival experience for artists and arts workers.

Pusaka Sunda
Pusaka Sunda is a gamelan degung ensemble, directed by Burhan Sukarma and Rae Ann Stahl, dedicated to performing traditional and contemporary gamelan degung music from West Java, Indonesia. Pusaka Sunda is based in San Jose, California and draws gamelan musicians from throughout the San Fransisco Bay Area. The group was formed in 1988 and has toured extensively in California as well as in other states. The AICEF grant suppported a June 2023 concert series in the Bay area featuring guest performers

Gamelan of the New Moon
This grant enabled Javanese master musician Darsono Hadiraharjo to be in residence for a 3 day workshop and concert at Rice University as well as tuning by Midiyanto, gamelan professor at UC Berkeley. Gamelan of the New Moon is a community-based Javanese gamelan group based in Houston, TX. |

ARCINDA
A community organization based in Colorado, ARCINDA (Arts and Culture of Indonesia), hosts cultural events showcasing gamelan and dance. AICEF's grant supported guest artists: Muryanto (gamelan leader at the Embasy of Indonesia in DC); Baghawan Ciptoning, dance graduate from ISI Yogya and active choreographer in Colorado and California; and Dr. Nurlina Syahrir, a dancer and professor in the dance department of Makassar State University.

Emory University Gamelan
Based in Atlanta, AICEF's grant enabled Emory to purchase a full set of shadow puppetsd (wayang), which will be used in performance beginning in 2024.
In fall 2022, the Emory Javanese Gamelan Ensemble welcomed the current director, Darsono Hadiraharjo, who hails from a long line of prominent musicians and dalang family in Klaten, Central Java. The Emory Javanese Gamelan Ensemble is equipped with talents and expertise in various performing arts of Indonesia, including music, theater, and dance. Furthermore, Emory’s ethnomusicology program offers students and community members opportunities to learn about important cultural contexts and meanings that form the basis of these Indonesian arts.
