2024 Cultural grant recipients

East Hawaii Cultural Center
The EHCC, based in Hilo, supports performing and visual arts activities in local communities. "Molten Blossom" is the organization's community Javanese gamelan group under the leadership of Carol Walker. An AICEF grant allowed Molten Blossom to host Javanese gamelan master Bapak Wakidi Dwijomartono and wayang scholar Dr. Kitsie Emerson in January 2025 for workshops, performances, private lessons, and a free public lecture by Emerson on contemporary trends in the shadow theater (wayang) of central Java.

Gamelan Raga Kusuma
Based at the University of Richmond, an AICEF grant enabled the group to perform at the August 25th, 2024 WOW Indonesia Festival in Washington, D.C. The performance also included Peni Candra Rini, an internationally reknowned vocalist from Indonesia.

Katonah Library
AICEF's grant to the village library in Katonah, NY allowed them to host a wayang (shadow puppet) performance by Sumarsam, Professor of Music in the World Music program at Wesleyan University on May 18, 2024.mest ava, Indonesia.Pusaka Sunda is a gamelan degung ensemble, directed by Burhan Sukarma and Rae Ann Stahl, dedicated to performing traditional and contemporary gamelan degung music from West Java, Indonesia.

Percussion Society of Indonesia
 The AICEF grant enabled Bandung Philharmonic tympanist, Djati Rekso Wibowo, to attend master classes and intensive tympani workshops at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention on June 10, 2024 in Houston, TX.

Gamelan Kusuma Laras

​Throughout its 41-year existence, Gamelan Kusuma Laras has mesmerized audiences with its renditions of traditional Javanese music on instruments created for the Indonesia Pavilion at the 1964-65 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, Queens. The NYC-based classical Javanese gamelan (orchestra of gongs, bronze xylophones, percussion, zither, bowed lute, drums, and solo and choral voices), comprised of Americans and Indonesians, is under the artistic direction of I.M. Harjito.​ AICEF's grant allowed the group to host several Javanese guest artists for its December 2024 "klenengan": ​DARSONO HADIRAHARJO, HENI SAVITRI (musicians) and DEWATI RAHMAYANI, dancer
